Digging into open source GIS for archaeology: 5 practical examples

Thursday, July 18, 2024
2:00 pm - 3:00 pm EST

Archaeologists all around the world rely on open source GIS for their day-to-day work. At LunaGeo, we work with a number of cultural resource management firms who use QGIS, PostgreSQL, PostGIS, and Geoserver in all phases of their projects, from initial background research to final report deliverables. This webinar will demonstrate 5 practical examples of how open source GIS can be used in archaeology, namely:

  1. How to use the QGIS Print Composer’s Atlas function to create multiple layouts.
  2. How to centralize test pit data using PostGIS and enable multi-user editing.
  3. How to create a project database in PostgreSQL/PostGIS.
  4. How to georeference scanned maps in QGIS and then share them internally or externally via Geoserver.
  5. How to share project maps securely on the web using LunaMap Enterprise.

Through these examples, participants will learn more about how PostgreSQL, PostGIS, Geoserver, and QGIS can be used within the archaeology research process.
